BETHEL – The Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce will host an informational session on the proposed Oxford County casino from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the lecture hall at SAD 44’s Telstar Regional High School off Route 26.

Just like Wednesday night’s River Valley Growth Council casino debate at SAD 43’s Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, the Bethel event will pit casino spokeswoman Pat LaMarche against CasinosNo! spokesman Dennis Bailey.

According to chamber Executive Director Robin Zinchuk, LaMarche and Bailey will each be given 10 to 15 minutes to give their perspectives, then take questions.

“This is an opportunity to learn first-hand whether the casino proposal will be good for the citizens of Oxford County and the state of Maine or not,” Zinchuk stated Tuesday in a release.

Voters statewide will determine at next month’s referendum whether Oxford County gets its first ever casino, which would be located in Oxford.

Rather than take sides, the chamber’s board of directors left the matter up to voters.

“The Oxford County casino referendum has become a highly charged debate. While the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is not taking a position either for or against, we think it is important for our members – as well as voters – to be well informed,” Zinchuk said.
