Board: Sabattus Board of Selectmen
Met: Tuesday night
All things election
Issue: The town office will stay open until 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Oct. 28, for absentee voting and new voter registration. New voters must bring proof of residency (like tax bill, water bill, car insurance – something with their name and address) and proof of identity (driver’s license, state ID.)
Issue: On Election Day, polls will be open at the town office from 8 a.m to 8 p.m.
Issue: Because of Election Day, selectmen moved their next regular meeting Wednesday, Nov. 5.
Lt. Foster retiring
Issue: Police Lt. Carl Foster gave notice that he’ll retire on March 31, 2009. He’s been with the town since January 1990.
Bens Hill: Abandoned
Issue: For months, selectmen have wrestled with whether the town abandoned an unpaved portion of Bens Hill Road decades ago. If Sabattus still owned it, the town would be responsible for needed repairs.
The scoop: Selectmen decided: It was abandoned back in February 1964; the town hasn’t done any work since.
Up next: The town will send its determination to the Androscoggin County Registry of Deeds. Residents could fight the decision through an attorney.
Dam vote waits ’til May
Issue: People upset at the property damage and erosion caused by water levels on Sabattus Pond signed a petition, turned into the town clerk last week, to take back control of Sleeper Dam and pull out of an interlocal agreement with Wales and Greene.
Up next: Instead of calling for a special vote, selectmen decided to put the question to residents at the regular town meeting next spring. Lucille Laliberte, who presented the signatures last week, agreed.
