WESTFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Police say an 8-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the head with a submachine gun at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
The Republican Newspaper of Springfield reports that the accident occurred about 2 p.m. Sunday when the unnamed boy lost control of an Uzi submachine gun he was shooting under the supervision of range officers during the annual machine gun shoot at the club.
The boy was conscious and lying on the ground with a wound to the right side of his head when police and emergency medical technicians arrived at the scene. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment.
Police say the victim is not from Westfield and an investigation is underway, although the incident appears accidental.
