Mr. Chas H. Nudd of Auburn has recently blasted a well out of the solid rock on which his new cottage is located at Tripp Pond in Poland. While this work was going on, a seam was struck that contained fine specimens of iron pyrites. It is thought that tourmaline pockets may be found in that locality and an effort to locate them will be made.

A well-known local textile official was the subject of a bone-rattling joke in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

A friend called him on the telephone at 3:30 a.m., said it was the police department, and informed the sleepy-eyed victim that there was a dead man in his car parked outside.

Wide awake now, the textile official went to his car and there in the front seat was … a fake skeleton.

AUGUSTA – Beginning this month, Maine’s food-stamp distribution system will be tightened up again to guard against stamp theft, according to state officials.

“We are going to certify Biddeford because (food-stamp envelope theft) became a problem” there, says Carolyn Collins, business manager of the state’s distribution center.

Biddeford recipients will join those in Lewiston and part of Portland in receiving their monthly allotment of stamps by certified mail, says Ms. Collins. Such mailings cost about 70 cents extra per envelope, she said.

But according to Human Services Commissioner Michael Petit, the money is well spent, since it reduces the food-stamp loss rate in problem areas by about half.
