SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) – One man was killed Monday when a small plane crashed a half-mile southeast of the runway at North Central State Airport in Smithfield, authorities said.

Authorities could not immediately identify the body, said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. It was not immediately clear whether other people were on board the plane.

The aircraft, a Piper PA-32, left T.F. Green Airport in Warwick and was headed north to the smaller facility in Smithfield. The crash was reported just after 5 p.m.

Firefighters were sorting through the wreckage Monday night.

The plane was registered to Robert A. Zoglio Jr., of Richmond. A phone message left at a number listed for Zoglio was not immediately returned.
