OTTAWA – Alex Tanguay scored on Montreal’s fourth shootout attempt to give the Canadiens a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

Tanguay put a backhand past Alex Auld after Andrei Markov scored the only goal on Montreal’s first three attempts.

Carey Price, who made 23 saves during the game, stopped Daniel Alfredsson, Jarkko Ruutu and Antoine Vermette after Jason Spezza scored on Ottawa’s first shot in the tiebreaker.

The Senators’ losing streak reached six games (0-5-1).

Markov drew Montreal even at 2 with 4:24 remaining in the third. Markov drove a slap shot past Auld from the right faceoff circle for his second goal of the season.

Saku Koivu pulled the Canadiens even at 1 with his seventh goal on a power play 13:33 into the first.

Dany Heatley gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead 4:21 in with his team-leading 11th goal.

Nick Foligno put Ottawa ahead 2-1 with his second goal on a power play 4:58 into the third.

Montreal’s Guillaume Latendresse drew a high-sticking penalty after he got his stick up on defenseman Anton Volchenkov in the Senators’ zone with 15.2 remaining in regulation.

Auld stopped 19 shots in his fifth straight start for Ottawa.

Montreal won for just the third time in its last eight games (3-4-1) since getting off to an 8-1-1 start.

Ottawa was without center Mike Fisher and right wing Chris Neil, both sidelined because of knee injuries.

Devils 3, Panthers 1

NEWARK, N.J. – Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta each had a goal and an assist in the New Jersey Devils’ 3-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Defenseman Paul Martin ignited a two-goal spurt in a 62-second span early in the third period, and Scott Clemmensen came within 11:18 of his first shutout in more than four years as the Devils won their second straight game after losing four in a row.

Clemmensen finished with 23 saves.

Michael Frolik, the 10th pick overall in the 2006 draft, spoiled Clemmensen’s bid for a third career shutout, scoring his first NHL goal on a power play.

Elias and Gionta combined to break a scoreless tie at 6:47 of the second period on what turned out to be the Devils’ only shot on Tomas Vokoun in the stanza.

Dainius Zubrus, who had two assists, started the play by collecting the puck along the sideboards and sending it into the right corner to Gionta.

The little wing found Elias alone in front and he backhanded the puck into an empty net after deking Vokoun out of position.

Canucks 3, Wild 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Daniel Sedin scored the winner midway through the third period in the Vancouver Canucks’ 3-2 victory over the Minnesota on Thursday night.

Steve Bernier and Pavol Demitra also scored to help Vancouver beat Minnesota for the second time this season. The Canucjs are 6-0-2 in their past eight games and have not lost in regulation to a division foe in six games (5-0-1).

Curtis Sanford made 28 saves for his first win since Dec. 12, 2007, a span of 13 games.

Mikko Koivu scored twice for Minnesota, which lost for the second time in six games – both to Vancouver.

Penguins 3, Thrashers 2

ATLANTA – Petr Sykora redirected Sidney Crosby’s slap shot on a power play with 2:40 remaining to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Thursday night, the Penguins’ seventh win in their last eight games.

Crosby scored his seventh goal to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead 12:24 into the second period. He also was credited with a pair of assists, including his 18th on Sykora’s fourth goal of the season.

Atlanta has lost two straight following a five-game winning streak.

Slava Kozlov, scoring a goal in his third straight game, gave the Thrashers a 1-0 lead on a power play 4:41 into the first with his 11th of the season.

Miroslav Satan’s ninth goal, a tip-in at the 10:57 mark of the first, forced a 1-all tie for the Penguins. Jim Slater made it 2-2 with his second goal, a wide wraparound from the right side 1:14 after Crosby scored.

Tyler Kennedy set up Crosby’s goal, stealing the puck behind the net from Ron Hainsey after locking skates with the Atlanta defenseman.

With Crosby skating through the slot, Kennedy earned his seventh assist by sliding the puck from the left side of the crease. Crosby was falling backward as he fired a wrist shot past goalie Ondrej Pavelec.

Blackhawks 6, Stars 3

DALLAS – Kris Versteeg scored the tiebreaking power-play goal with 30 seconds left in the second period, and Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 31 shots to help the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Dallas Stars 6-3 on Thursday night.

Patrick Kane had a pair of goals for the Blackhawks, who had lost three of their previous four, and Martin Havlat, Ben Eager and Brian Campbell added goals.

With the score even at 3 in the closing seconds of the second period, Versteeg sped around three Stars and skated to the front of the net, beating Dallas goalie Marty Turco for Versteeg’s seventh goal of the season.

Flames 1, Avalanche 0

DENVER – Miikka Kiprusoff made 18 saves for his second shutout of the season, and Daymond Langkow scored his fifth goal in the Calgary Flames’ 1-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

Kiprusoff was rarely challenged in earning his 28th career shutout.

Peter Budaj had 32 saves for the Avalanche, who lost both games of the home-and-home series with the Flames. Calgary beat Colorado 4-1 on Tuesday night.
