BANGOR – The Bates College women’s basketball squad used a 13-4 run late in the first half to pull away from Husson Tuesday evening, and came away with 79-64 non-conference victory.

The Bobcats (3-1) were paced by Val Beckwith with 25 points, while Maggie DePoy added 14. Bates held a slim five-point advantage at the break before outscoring their opponent 41-31 in the second half.

Shelby Bradford led the Eagles (1-3) with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Bethany Sevey chipped in with 14 points, the only other player in double figures.

CMCC 70, Hesser 50

AUBURN – Michelle Holmquist drained a game-high 18 points and led the way with seven rebounds as Central Maine Community College trounced Hesser College 70-50 in a Tuesday Yankee Conference matchup.

After swapping the lead throughout the first half, the Mustangs used the depth of their bench, led by Teira Durgin (10 points) to outscore Hesser’s reserves 29-8.

Kayla Ellis added nine points and seven assists while Janessa Thomas, Kerri Harris, Danielle Hebert and Katie Martin each tallied six as the Mustangs remained perfect on the season at 7-0.

Meghan O’Regan and Whitney Hanks combined for 23 points for the Blue Devils (3-4).

Men’s basketball
Bates 84, Thomas 80

WATERVILLE – Brian Ellis netted a game-high 23 points to lead Bates to a narrow 84-80 victory over Thomas in men’s basketball action Tuesday evening.

Andrew Duncanson led the Terriers (1-4) with 21 points, while Darrell Alexander chipped in with 18. Thomas was down by six with just over a minute to play before forcing two turnovers and cutting the lead to two.

Mike Burchill had a chance to give the Terriers their second straight home win, but could not get his 3-pointer from the corner to fall. Burchill finished the contest with nine points.

CMCC 96, Hesser 71

AUBURN – Tyler Smithgall’s 25 points led five Mustangs in double figures as Central Maine Community College ran away with a 96-71 victory over Hesser College in a matchup of the two top-ranked teams in the Yankee Conference.

The No. 2 ranked Mustangs opened up a 10-point lead at the break and never looked back, keeping the Blue Devils off balance with a variety of defensive looks and 60 percent shooting from the floor.

Cam Angell hit five from behind the arc, finishing with 24 points. Freshman Rod Tirell tallied double figures for the first time this season with 13 points while Nate Damm added 12.

Matt Lyons registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards and Matt Sceviour dished out seven assists.

It was the fourth consecutive win for the Mustangs (8-2), who improve to 4-0 in Yankee Conference play.

Kevin Mulready led all scorers with 29 points to lead the Blue Devils (6-2).

Bowdoin 68, Southern Maine 52

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin went 12-for-23 from 3-point range, including eight first-half connections, to shoo away Southern Maine, 68-52, in a a men’s basketball clash Tuesday.

Will Hanley led the Polar Bears (5-1) with 13 points. Randy Defeo added 12 and Kyle Jackson 10.

Sean Bergeron topped all scorers with 15 for the Huskies (1-5). Andy Tracy chipped in 12 and Otis Smith 10.

Boston Coll. 57, Iowa 55

BOSTON (AP) – Iowa’s Andrew Brommer missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 0.4 seconds left and Boston College held on to beat the Hawkeyes 57-55 on Tuesday night despite scoring just one point in the game’s last 4:45.

BC (5-2) improved to 3-0 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge – the only team other than Duke with a perfect record – but the Eagles almost gave it away after taking a 56-45 lead.

After Iowa (6-2) cut the deficit to one point, Tyrese Rice, who scored 15 points in all, made one of two free throws with 12.5 seconds left. The Hawkeyes almost threw the ball away at the buzzer, but Corey Raji grabbed Brommer as he tried to turn around and throw up a desperation 3-pointer.

Brommer, who is 3-for-15 in his career from the line, clanged it off the front of the rim and time expired.
