AUBURN – Three men and two women were arrested in connection with a Sunday night home invasion in which a woman and her teenage son were attacked with a baseball bat, police said Monday.

Tanya Cahill, 22, of Lewiston, and Amanda Benoit, 20, of Jay, were each charged with burglary and three counts of aggravated assault. Brandon Staples, 21, of Lewiston, was charged with burglary and three counts of assault. Nicholas Pelletier, 18, of Auburn, was charged with robbery and criminal trespass. Nicholas Baril, 20, of Auburn, was charged with criminal conspiracy.

Police said the five knew the people who lived at 118 Western Ave. and believed they had stolen items from the assailants. The five allegedly wanted to retaliate.

Cahill, Benoit, Staples and Pelletier knocked on the door around 9 p.m. and were let in, police said. They then allegedly robbed the home and hit 39-year-old Donna Gammon and her 18-year-old son, Matthew Gammon, with a baseball bat. Also assaulted in the home were 18-year-old Jacob Legee and 18-year-old Tyler Johnson.

Police said Cahill, Benoit, Staples and Pelletier then fled in an SUV driven by Baril. Police stopped Baril on Longley Bridge soon after the assault.

All five were being held Monday night at the Androscoggin County Jail on bail ranging from $350 to $25,000.

Benoit, Staples, Pelletier and Baril have been involved in fights before.

Baril was assaulted last March inside Spare Time Recreation in Lewiston after he refused to step outside and fight two men who challenged him. He was treated for a dislocated shoulder; Joshua Buteau, 20, of Auburn is awaiting trial on a charge of aggravated assault in that incident.

Staples was stabbed last February during an early-morning fight at Walnut and Bartlett streets in Lewiston. Clayton Chapman, 18, of Lewiston, was charged with elevated aggravated assault. At the time, police said the two fought over a woman they both knew. The assault charge against Chapman has since been dismissed.

In March and again in July, Staples was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. In May, he was found guilty on charges of unlawful possession of a scheduled drug and violating condition of release, and sentenced to serve two days in the county jail, plus pay a $400 fine.

Pelletier was charged with assault on July 10. That case is still open.

In December 2006, Benoit was charged with burglary and aggravated assault in connection with a break-in at an apartment on Bartlett Street in Lewiston. Police alleged a 36-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter were stabbed in a confrontation with Benoit and two others over money or property. Both charges against Benoit have since been dismissed.
