LEWISTON – The Center for Wisdom’s Women, located at the corner of Bates and Ash streets and formerly known as Wisdom’s Center, is open again from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The center, formerly run by the Daughters of Wisdom, served a thousand individual women and logged more than 22,000 visits over the course of its nine years of operation. When the center closed it doors at the end of June, a group of local women organized to re-open it.

Since re-opening on Oct. 17, women from across the greater twin city area have visited the center and offered their insights about what future services the center might provide. The center’s goal is to reach full funding and previous levels of operation by January 2010.

Marjory Zoet Bankson, author and professional potter from Alexandria, Va., visited the Center for Wisdom’s Women to help celebrate its recent reopening. She led the women in creating personalized mugs and offered advice and guidance to the center’s newly formed board of directors.

Bankson is the author of “The Soulwork of Clay,” “Call to the Soul” and “Seasons of Friendship.” She staffs the spiritual companionship program at Washington National Cathedral and has taught at Virginia Seminary. For the past 20 years, she was the director of the organization Faith@Work and editor of their magazine.

The mission of the Center for Wisdom’s Women, the only place of its kind in Maine, provides a sacred and safe place that supports and empowers women. The center offers hospitality, listening, personal and spiritual guidance that is respectful of all faith traditions, assistance in accessing local resources to meet needs and encouragement toward healthy life choices.

Through support groups, activities and programs, women have the chance to meet and network with others, build friendships and support each other in their daily struggles.

Donations can be sent to Trinity/Wisdom at PO Box 1016, Lewiston. For more information, see www.wisdomswomen.org or contact Acting Director Klara Tammany at [email protected].
