100 years ago, 1908

Earle W. Marshall of Boston, the young baritone of whom Auburn and Lewiston are so proud, will sail for Florence, Italy, Jan. 2, where he will study with Vannuccini, the most famous vocal instructor in Italy. Mr. Marshall is an Auburn boy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas H. Marshall of 106 Goff Street.

• There are now 82 inmates at the Lewiston City farm. The last child, a small girl, was given away last week, which leaves only adults at the farm. This is the largest number of adults in years and the buildings are so crowded that there are two in many rooms.

50 years ago, 1958

The eight-story Professional Center building at 145 Lisbon St. was sold yesterday to Maurice I. Miller of Miller Investments, Brookline, Mass., Lewiston realtor Charles Levin announced last night.

The warranty deed filed yesterday in the county Registry of Deeds office indicated a purchase price of about $143,000.

The building was sold by Anthony Dumas of Lisbon and Attorney Paul L. Powers of Freeport, who bought the building from the Manufacturers National Bank in March 1956.

25 years ago, 1983

WCBB presented five persons, including a Lewiston student, with awards for outstanding volunteer service Friday at the Lewiston television station’s Annual Friends Meeting.

Charles Passerman of Lewiston was one of the recipients of the Manager’s Gavel Award, which is given to volunteers whom the public television station’s general manager deems worthy of special recognition for outstanding contributions to the station.

Passerman, a senior at Lewiston High School, has served on the annual Great TV Auction board of directors and performed a variety of services to the station’s production department.

Other award recipients were William “Jesse” Bryan of Bowdionham, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Robinson of Paris and Robert D. Edwards of Bath.
