UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Bill Guerin scored twice to reach 400 goals, Rick DiPietro made 28 saves in his first game since late October, and the New York Islanders snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over Toronto on Friday night.
Guerin became the 79th NHL player, and the eighth U.S.-born player, to score 400 goals. Kyle Okposo and Freddy Meyer also scored for the Islanders, who won for the first time since Nov. 29 to end an 0-9-1 slump. DiPietro assisted on Okposo’s goal to break Billy Smith’s franchise record for career points by a goalie with 14.

NEWARK, N.J. – Marc-Andre Fleury made 37 saves for Pittsburgh’s first shutout of the season, and Ruslan Fedotenko scored in the second period.
Fleury, making his fifth straight start after missing 12 games because of an undisclosed injury, had his 12th career shutout.
Scott Clemmensen stopped 18 shots for New Jersey. The Devils were shut out 2-0 by Boston on Tuesday night and haven’t scored in seven regulation periods.
Capitals 3, Sabres 2
WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin, Viktor Kozlov and Boyd Gordon scored goals, and Jose Theodore made 22 saves for Washington.
Ovechkin pushed the puck through Henrik Tallinder’s legs just inside the blue line and fired a shot past Patrick Lalime while falling, giving the Capitals a 3-1 lead.
Washington improved to an Eastern Conference-best 14-1-1 at home.
Hurricanes 5, Thrashers 4
ATLANTA – Eric Staal scored three goals in 4:31 span of the third period to overshadow Bryan Little’s first career hat trick in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Friday night.
Staal’s sixth career hat trick, and second in 17 games, helped Carolina win for the second time in three games and fourth in six.
After Staal tie it at 3 on a power play with 12:33 remaining, Little answered with his third goal of the game, redirecting Niclas Havelid’s wrister for his fifth goal in two games and 17th this season.
Staal tied it again at 9:18, firing a shot off the left post and behind Johan Hedberg.
The Carolina star made it 5-4 barely a minute later, easily skating around Thrashers defenseman Nathan Oystrick and beating Hedberg.
Predators 3, Red Wings 2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Defenseman Kevin Klein scored a power-play goal, Vern Fiddler added a goal late in the second period, and the Nashville Predators held off the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Friday night in their first meeting of the season.
Defenseman Greg Zanon also scored, Martin Erat had two assists, and Dan Ellis stopped 38 shots in the Predators’ best scoring night since Dec. 13.
Nashville came in offensively challenged after managing just 22 goals over the past 13 games and going 2-2-1 over the past five.
Dan Cleary and Mikael Samuelsson scored for Detroit.
Blackhawks 5, Flyers 1
CHICAGO – Patrick Sharp scored his team-leading 19th goal of the season and the Chicago Blackhawks won their eighth straight to match the franchise record, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-1 on Friday night.
Andrew Ladd, Brian Campbell, Kris Versteeg and Dave Bolland also scored, and Nikolai Khabibulin made 17 saves. The Blackhawks also won eight straight games in December 1971 and January 1981.
Mike Richards scored for Philadelphia.
