PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) – A black bear that was part of a University of New Hampshire study aimed at teaching people about learning to live with bears was shot and killed by Nottingham police after trying to break into a woman’s home.
Police say the woman called 9-11 after the bear peered inside her home. Police found the bear had also broken a window.
It is New Hampshire Fish and Game policy that bears considered a nuisance can be destroyed.
UNH professor Peter Pekins said he had hoped to catch up to five bears in the Durham area this summer as part of his study on their habitat, but the shot bear was the only one tagged with a radio collar.
Fish and Game director Glenn Normandeau said his department will review its policy.
