AUBURN – Furniture builders Thos. Moser this week announced layoffs and restructuring at its offices and production facility at 72 Wright’s Landing.

A company spokesman said the economic recession has had a direct impact on the number of orders handled at the Auburn plant, prompting the staff changes.

Early reports were that 35 people had been laid off by Thursday. However, the company did not confirm a specific number.

“Due to the national recession and the collapse of the housing and credit markets, the company has been experiencing a low order volume,” Marketing Manager Scott Wentzell wrote in a statement. “In order to re-balance the company’s production capabilities with the current and projected level of demand, the company has initiated a reduction in its labor force and a restructuring of the management team.”

The company was formed in 1972 in New Gloucester and later moved to Auburn where it employed more than 100 people, roughly 60 of them builders.

According to Wentzell, the company is supporting the employees who have been affected by the layoff and restructuring with a transition plan.

“Thos. Moser plans to continue building its high-quality furniture in Auburn for many years to come,” Wentzell wrote, “and believes a leaner organization will be well-situated to address the challenges of today’s marketplace in order to continue to positively contribute to the economic success of the local community, as it has been doing for the last 36 years.”

The company crafts more than 200 pieces of furniture in its standard production line, including dining and lounge seating, dining tables, benches, stools, beds, desks and other home offices pieces.

The company also maintains a catalog business and operates seven showrooms in Freeport, Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
