LEWISTON – A pair of water line breaks had city crews scrambling Thursday morning.
Crews discovered a break in a 14-inch water line under Sabattus Street near Pond Road about 4 p.m. Wednesday. Public Services Director Dave Jones said the line there was older, installed some time in the 1950s, and made of cast iron.
“We did some road work out there this summer, and they used a vibrator roller to compact that pavement,” Jones said. Those vibrations could have contributed to the break, but he said frost damage from January’s cold temperatures was just as likely a cause.
The break took away water service to customers living on Sabattus Street east of Pond Road. Crews had the line repaired Thursday morning.
They discovered a second break, on a line of the same size and age, under outer Lisbon Street near the South Lisbon Street intersection. Crews found that leak early Thursday morning, and Jones estimated they’d be finished that afternoon.
