Flex Days was a program I viewed on the news a week ago. It was an idea proposed that in the winter, schools shorten the school week to four days instead of five. The school board would do this because it saves money for heating schools. It saves gas for buses. The idea would be to add some extra time on the four days. I think this is a perfectly acceptable idea, and Tripp Middle School should definitely look into it.

First of all, let’s face it. We are in an economic crisis. We need to make sacrifices. Shortening school weeks to save hundreds of dollars in oil and heating costs seems like a smart, modern idea. Maine winters are brutal. Snow piles up, and temperatures are freezing. Students and teachers can all use a break.

Extended weekend time could also provide extra time for homework. Children could spend more time with their families. There are many different holidays and occasions that happen during this time period, so the extended weekend could also provide time for that. Students wouldn’t have to miss school days for these occasions.

All in all, I don’t see why schools faced with harsh winters wouldn’t use the Flex Days plan. It saves money on oil, gas, and gives us a break. I think this is an effective idea because schoolwork and classes would still have adequate time if days were lengthened. I am enthusiastic about this idea and hope to see our school district use it.
