NORWAY – Lilla E. Sylvester, 89, of Poland died Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Poland, on Nov. 5, 1919, the daughter of Lewis and Velma Foster Whittier. Her mother died when Lilla was a young child and she was brought up by her father and stepmother, Muriel Haskell Whittier.
She graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1938. She worked for Auburn Shoe Manufacture’s for many years and then for Key Bank from which she retired.
She was married to Fred Sylvester who died, and then she spent many years with her companion, Frank Bean, now deceased. She will be remembered for the many afghans she crocheted and gave away and her love of the birds.
She is survived by one brother, James Whittier and his wife, Tania, and family of Poland; one sister, Sylvia Lowell and her husband, Edward, and family of Mechanic Falls; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Whittier of Mechanic Falls; also Ethel and Craig Turner and family of Otisfield and Jan and Pete Schwinchek and family of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Charles, Francis, Bruce and Clarence; and a sister, Elizabeth.
