BRUNSWICK – Elizabeth Idella Rand Merrill, 77, of Brunswick, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 29, at her residence.

She was born in Lewiston, on Jan. 28, 1932, the daughter of Carleton H. Rand, M.D. and Alfreda Bowie Rand. She attended Lewiston High School and graduated from Kents Hill School in 1950.

Betsy married Charles L. Merrill in Lewiston on June 3, 1951. They moved to Brunswick in 1963, where she became a member of First Parish Church. She also volunteered at Mid Coast Hospital, Mt. Ararat High School and Maranacook High School in Readfield. She also enjoyed knitting, cross stitch, tennis and reading. She was an avid Red Sox fan, pet lover and oil painter.

Surviving are her husband of Brunswick; her sons, Christopher L. Merrill of Topsham and Andrew C. Merrill of Brunswick; her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Merrill Lonsdale and her husband, Thomas, of Forked River, N.J.; two brothers, David W. Rand of Lewiston and James E. Rand of Auburn; her sisters-in-law, Janis Rand and Hazel Rand; and four grandchildren, Matthew, Kimberly, Julia and Samantha.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert L. Rand.
