LISBON – Applications are available for residents interested in participating in the Lisbon Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy.

The program will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday from Feb. 24 through May 5.

The academy gives people an inside look at the Police Department and all facets of law enforcement. It doesn’t train them to be officers.

Topics include criminal law, communications, drug enforcement and drug education. Also covered are an overview of the criminal justice system, patrol procedures, conduct and ethics, K-9 program, domestic violence, operating under the influence enforcement, accident and crime scene investigations.

Participants will be scheduled to ride along with a police officer, meet the chief and staff members.

Academy classes are taught by Lisbon police officers.

Applicants for the academy must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Lisbon and/or the surrounding area, have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor arrests within a year of the application. Any of the above requirements may be waived by the police chief.

They must sign a release giving the Police Department permission to conduct a background check for the purposes of the academy only.

Applications are available online at www.lisbonpd.com or at the Lisbon Police Department, 300 Lisbon St. They should be submitted by Feb. 13.
