OXFORD – The director of the Oxford County Regional Communications Center is looking for volunteers to jump-start a long-standing advisory committee.

“We haven’t met since last summer,” said James Miclon, who recently sent letters to all towns and emergency services in Oxford County asking for volunteers to sit on the 12-member committee. The committee will work on issues relating to emergency services, complaints, budget and so forth that impact the county.

The committee will be made up of a representative of the fire service, emergency medical service and law enforcement from each of three zones within Oxford County.

“We have long-standing issues and have always had an advisory board,” said Miclon of the board that has undergone name changes over the last 30 years but has been active in a variety of issues until last year.

For example, he said, as the sole developer of the communications center budget, he often would seek advice from the advisory committee on reducing or increasing line items or promoting the budget within the county or before the county commissioners.

“They give me guidance as to what way we should take,” he said.

Miclon said interest in the committee was waning when he took over the communications center in April of 2006 and at that time he became intent on starting the board again to create a more efficient line of communication between the communications center and the organizations it dispatches for.

The volunteers will work on a two-year term and meet on a quarterly basis and on a schedule set up by a new chairman, said Miclon. The director of the communications center, the director of the Emergency Management Services and an appointee from the sheriff’s office are also standing committee members, he said.

Miclon said he hopes to have the first meeting in April.
