CANTON – Two area fire departments received Department of Homeland Security grants that will enable them to update equipment and improve firefighting abilities.
In the Canton Volunteer Fire Department, a grant sought by fire Chief Wayne Dube resulted drew $17,328.
Assistant Chief Mark Blanchette said the money will pay for 10 sets of turnout gear and seven portable radios. The 23-member department includes 11 firefighters certified to enter a burning building.
He said existing turnout gear – heavy jackets and pants worn at fires – is worn out. The new radios have improved technology that make it easier for firefighters to communicate with each other.
“Proper gear and radios makes it easier to better fight fires,” Blanchette said.
The Carrabassett Valley Fire Department received a $110,200 Homeland Security grant, according to a news release issued by Sen. Susan Collins’ office.
Carrabassett Fire Chief Courtney Knapp said the money will pay for 12 breathing apparatuses to replace some that are about 25 years old. Some money also will be used to buy a thermal-imaging camera.
He said the department has about 24 volunteers, 16 certified to enter burning buildings.
The town must contribute a match of about $5,800 to get the federal money.
