KINGFIELD – A public hearing on the proposed Kingfield Fire Department Service Billing Ordinance will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m. when selectmen meet.
The board’s usual Monday meeting was moved to Tuesday because of the President’s Day holiday, said Greg Davis, town administrative assistant.
The ordinance is needed to allow the Fire Department to bill for major events that can require responders to be at scenes for hours. For situations such as a logging truck accident or a hazardous materials spill that might take up to 14 hours, there’s no way to recoup some of the expenses, Davis said.
A public hearing is required prior to the vote on the ordinance at the annual meeting scheduled for 9 a.m. March 7 at the Kingfield Elementary School.
The ordinance would exempt local taxpayers who already help pay for Fire Department services through taxes, Davis said.
With the ordinance the department plans to bill a minimum rate of $200 for being called out with hourly rates added for tanker trucks, engines, squad trucks and firefighters.
“We don’t have a lot of these … it’s mainly a rare occurrence, but it provides a way to attempt to recoup some of the expense,” Davis said.
After the hearing, the board will consider a request from the Recreation Committee to have Public Works plow an access road to the former Knapp property on Route 142 so people can skate on a small pond there.
The committee has already received permission from property owners Nestle Waters North America and an abutting property owner, he said.
Town reports have arrived from the printers and are available in preparation for the March town meeting, Davis said.
