RUMFORD – Sherwood Robbins, 83, of Dixfield, died Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Rumford Community Hospital in Rumford.

He was born on, Sept. 20, 1925, in South Carthage, the son of John and Evelyn (Daley) Robbins. He attended and graduated from Dixfield schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Sherwood served during World War II. On Aug. 18, 1946, he married Alfreda Grover in Dixfield, where they made their home.

He retired from Boise Cascade in Rumford in 1988, after 40 years of service. During that time he was the superintendent of the number 10, 11 and 12 paper machines. He was a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church and American Legion.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and puttering around his camp on Haley Pond in Rangeley. His life centered around family and perhaps his greatest pleasure was welcoming family and friends into his home daily starting at 6:30 a.m.

His door was a revolving one seeing people come through to say “hi,” and have a cup of coffee all day long. In recent years the company and care-giving of his sister, Barbara, and sister-in-law, Joyce, was God-sent.

Sherwood is survived by his son, Paul Robbins and his wife, Julie, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; brothers Ernest Robbins and his wife, Theresa, of Dixfield, Walter Robbins and his wife, Haroldine, of Virginia Beach, Va., and David and his wife, Joyce, of Dixfield; two sisters, Muriel McAuley of Wilton and Barbara Buzzell of Dixfield; grandchildren Sara Rock and her husband, John, of West Peru, Jon Robbins and his companion, Tamara Webber, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Dave Robbins and his companion, Beth, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Zachery Robbins of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Katlyn Green of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Adam Rock of West Peru, Josh, Gabriel and Katie Robbins, all of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Alfreda, on May 21, 2002; brothers, Vivian, Richard, Alston, Vernon and Oscar.
