MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Jake Simon was walked with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning to score Rich Velotta with the winning run to give Bates College a 6-5 victory over Alma in Edwin Thompson’s coaching debut with the Bobcats.
Bates jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but fell behind 5-3. After getting a run back in the eighth, Bates tied it before the game-winning walk.
Nick Townsend collected three hits, including a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base for the Scots (0-1).
Demitrios Gatzogiannis pitched three strong innings in relief to earn the win.
Men’s basketball
Lyndon State 87, UMF 71
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Brad Durr poured in a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lyndon State to an 87-71 victory over Maine-Farmington. Jose Fortunato tossed in 10 points off the bench for the Hornets (10-13).
Eric Taylor scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Beavers (11-11), while teammate Josh Tanguay also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Eric Lelansky chipped in with 14 points for Farmington.
Women’s basketball
UMF 67, Lyndon State 54
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Ashley Busque fired off 23 points to propel the University of Maine at Farmington to a 67-54 triumph over Lyndon State in NAC women’s basketball action Friday.
Erin Porter had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Beavers (10-14), and Caitlyn Laflin amassed 13 opints and 11 boards.
Jackie Wetzel was the lone double-figure scorer for the Hornets (8-15) with 17 points.
