LEWISTON – Melissa Paione and Tim Brodsky of Edward Little and Allie Lewandowski of St. Dom’s enjoyed breakout performances Saturday in the New England high school swimming championships at Bates College.
Paione, an EL freshman, placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 10.14 seconds to earn the silver medal. Lewandowski, a sophomore, was fourth in the same event, 0.62 seconds behind Paione.
Paione also edged Lewandowski in the 200 individual medley, 2:22.30 to 2:22.35, rallying during the final freestyle leg to touch just before the St. Dom’s swimmer.
Brodsky, an EL junior, finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 22.82 seconds. Less than half a second separated the top four swimmers.
Maine swimmers won six individual races and four relays against New England’s best. The Messalonskee girls’ 200 medley relay team broke the New England meet record with a time of 1:56.99.
