LEWISTON – Roger J. Simard, 84, of 398 Pond Road in Lewiston, died Sunday, March 8, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Augusta, on Aug. 17, 1924, the son of Henry T. and Lillian Desjardins Simard. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School. On Sept. 20, 1944, he married the former Frances White, who passed away on Jan. 3, 1995.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in Europe. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he owned and operated Colonial Ice Cream and the Dairy Joys in Lewiston and Auburn. A member of St. Patrick’s Parish, he enjoyed listening to books on tape and occasionally going to the casino in Bangor. In his younger days, he was an avid reader and enjoyed playing softball.

Survivors include a son, Thomas of Lewiston; three daughters, Sally and husband, Gregory French, of Auburn, Georgette and husband, Gary Rattray, of Lewiston and Gloria and husband, Robert St. Hilaire, of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by a son, Michael; a daughter, Sandra Dutil; two brothers, Paul and Albert; and a sister, Lucille Turner.
