NORWAY – A local man was injured when he rolled a snowmobile over, trapping and twisting his leg in the engine compartment, Norway patrolman Theron Bickford said Thursday night.
Anthony Billings Sr., 38, of Hobbs Pond Lane was riding alone in a field behind a cemetery off Watson Road when the accident happened about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, the officer said.
“He was test driving a snowmobile which he was looking to buy,” Bickford said.
Billings lost control of the 1987 Ski-Doo Formula at the edge of a field pocked with snow-covered dirt piles and rocks, the investigator explained.
“The sled rolled over onto him, trapping his leg in the engine compartment and twisting it. He wasn’t able to get the sled off himself,” the officer said.
Billings used his cell phone to call his son, Anthony Jr. of Paris, who then called the Oxford County Regional Communications Center for help.
Bickford and Norway police Sgt. James Ventresca responded to the back side of Hobbs Pond off Watson Road, and were only able to find Billings by calling his cell phone and shining spotlights around the area until Billings could see them.
“We thought he was behind the cemetery and headed across the field in waist-deep snow. After a few hundred yards we eventually found him,” Bickford said.
Along with Norway Fire Department personnel and PACE Ambulance workers, they were able to lift the machine, free Billings and carry him to the ambulance on Hobbs Pond Lane, he said. Billings had a leg injury and mild hypothermia, he added.
A nursing supervisor at Stephens Memorial Hospital said Thursday night that she had no information on Billings.
The machine, which belongs to Mark Todd of Hobbs Pond Lane, was damaged.
Maine Warden Rick Stone assisted at the scene.
Bickford said both law enforcement agencies are continuing the investigation.
