PORTLAND – Marjorie M. Pettingill, 85, a resident of Berry Road in Hartford, died unexpectedly, Sunday, March 15, at Maine Medical Center.

She was born June 11, 1923, in Bronx, N.Y., the daughter of Martin J. and Marie (Callan) Mealey Sr. She attended school in Dayton, Ohio, graduated in 1941 from Chatham High School in New Jersey, and continued her education at the University of Delaware.

In December 1945, she married her husband of 55 years, Lee Duren Pettingill. He passed away Nov. 11, 2001. They had made their home in Maryland until his retirement in 1978. At that time they moved to his family’s property in Hartford.

She devoted her life to her family and was an outstanding wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St. Phillips Church in Auburn and enjoyed being in the choir. She was a founding and charter member of Pine Tree Quilters Guild and the Granny’s Choice Quilters. She was an astute gardener, making the most of her harvest. She especially enjoyed being around her home and family.

She is survived by her children and their families, Michael of Hawaii, Marc and his companion, Elizabeth, of Baltimore, Md.; Marc’s children, Daniel and Elizabeth, her husband, Michael Magran and their daughter, Megan; Gregory and his wife, Holly, of Overland Park, Kan.; Gregory’s children, Gwendolyn, Jonathan, Nathan and Matthew, his wife, Lindsay, and their son, Noah; Mary Webb and her husband, Bruce, of Bath, their daughter, Galla Artiaga and her husband, Darrel, their son, Darrel; Hugh and his wife, Robin, of Westminster, Md.; their children, Julia and her husband, Jason Webster, Lindsay, Daniel, Carly and her husband, Chris Stutz, Rory, Haelee and Olivia; Timothy and his wife, Sybilla, of Lisbon Falls, their sons, Benjamin and John; Claire Pettingill Austin and her husband, Bob, of Buckfield, their children, Jaime, her husband, Rich Long and their children, Jack and Keath, Tylor Austin and her daughters, Ryanna, Morgan and Alexis, Sara and her husband, Andrew Quinn, Zachary Austin and Maura Broberg; Ellen Pettingill Wolfe and her husband, Britt, of Saco, their children, Katrin and Jacob; two sisters, Kathy Griffith of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Marie Mealey of Wilmington, Del.; and two brothers, Martin J. Mealey Jr. of Arlington, Va., and Eugene Mealey of Anderson, S.C.

She was predeceased by two sons, Daniel and David.
