LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) – A Massachusetts elementary school teacher has been ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty to beating his girlfriend and pulling the trigger of a loaded gun he pointed at her mother.

Edward Manzi of North Andover was arraigned Tuesday in Lawrence District Court on various charges, including attempted murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say the gun did not fire because it jammed.

The 47-year-old Manzi is being held pending a dangerousness hearing next Monday.

Authorities say the alleged incident happened Saturday and Manzi was arrested Sunday.

He has been suspended from his job as a sixth-grade social studies teacher in Tewksbury.

He claimed self defense in comments to reporters outside court.
