AUBURN – A Turner man escaped injury but faces criminal charges after his car flipped on Lake Shore Drive early Thursday and landed wheels-up on Lake Auburn.

Police said Joseph Michael Couture, 26, of 9 Skillings Corner Road, was driving west on Lake Shore Drive at about 4 a.m. when he lost control on a curve, crashed through trees and rolled onto the frozen lake.

Investigators said Couture’s car, a Subaru Impreza, rolled at least twice. It came to rest about 25 feet out on the lake, police said.

When officers arrived, they found the overturned car but no sign of the driver. Police said they later found Couture at his home. He was charged with failing to notify police of an accident.

Police said there were no passengers in Couture’s car. The crash remained under investigation Thursday night.
