HALLOWELL – The Lewiston Demons middle school hockey team recently captured the Northern Maine Middle School Hockey League championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over Leavitt at Kennebec Ice Arena.

Cam Marquis scored the winning goal 24 seconds into the extra session to give the Demons the victory against a tough Leavitt squad that had defeated Lewiston earlier in the tournament in pool play.

The Demons opened the playoffs with an easy 12-0 victory over Mt. Ararat. Marquis and Tyler Houle had two goals apiece, while Nicholas Perreault picked up one goal and four assists.

Kile Conn and Lauren Lessard chipped in a goal and two helpers each, and Cameron Boucher, Max Bolduc, Jacob Cloutier, Tanner Hubbard and Coleman Morency added one goal each. Noah Hutchinson pitched a shutout in goal.

The next day, Tommy Lepage, Hubbard and Bolduc picked up a goal each, but the Demons dropped a 6-3 decision to Leavitt. Tyler Hutchinson led Leavitt with a goal and two assists, while Jacob Gladu had two helpers.

The Demons punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 5-2 victory over Gardiner. Hubbard, Boucher, Lepage, Marquis and Perreault scored one goal each, while Perreault (two assists) and Eric Soucy (one assist) dominated in the offensive end throughout. Hutchinson had 17 saves.

Lewiston faced-off against unbeaten Win-Dale in the semifinals and rode a four-point game for Marquis for a 5-3 win and a berth in the championship game.

Jared Lapierrre had two assists, Lepage a goal and an assist, Perreault and Hubbard a goal each, and Bolduc one assist to lead a balanced attack, while Hutchinson and the defense of Morency, Houle, Lessard and Kianna Turmenne were solid in limiting Win-Dale to a handful of scoring opportunities.

In the title game, Hutchinson made 22 saves, while the Demons received solid efforts from Dixon Dilodovico and Shawn Gagnier.

Trailing 1-0 in the third period, Soucy set up Marquis for the tying goal at 4:47. In overtime, Lepage had a breakaway that was stopped by Leavitt goaltender John Marcoux. Perreault grabbed the rebound and found Marquis, whose shot slipped underneath the crossbar to set off a huge celebration the Demons and their fans.

The Demons wish to give a big thank you to PAL and Rooper’s for their continued support.
