LEWISTON – The city landfill will open for residents the next two Saturdays to relieve some of the pressure on curbside collections.

Spring cleanup collections of bulky household waste, brush, demolition debris and old appliances will begin Tuesday, April 21.

Bennett told city councilors that the city is trying to keep the curbside collections to one month this year. He hopes the special Saturday hours will reduce the amount of trash left on sidewalks.

“We’re hoping to reduce our costs, and we think opening the landfill might help us do that,” Bennett said. “We believe that a lot of people like the curbside program and if they can pitch in and help us save some money, it could help us decide to keep it going in some form next year.”

Residents should bring two forms of identification if they plan to bring household waste to the landfill on Saturdays. They should bring a driver’s license and a copy of their property tax bill. The landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 18 and 25.

Residents also can call the solid waste facility at 513-3005 to verify their address and register their vehicle’s license plate.

People who have their trash collected on Mondays and Tuesdays should have their waste curbside by April 21. Residents with Wednesday collections should have their trash curbside by Monday, April 27. Thursday customers should have their trash out by May 4 and Friday customers should have it out by May 11.

Councilors signaled that this year’s spring cleanup could be the last.

“People need to know that next year, it will change,” Councilor Nelson Peters said. “Whether we just collect brush or do something else, they need to realize that this curbside collection could be completely eliminated. They need to be forewarned so they can plan.”
