PARIS – The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to crack down on drug abuse with some financial help from Uncle Sam.
Sheriff Wayne Gallant said the county is eligible for up to $35,004 from a Justice Assistance Grant. The funds would not require a match and are part of the federal stimulus plan.
The department’s plans have been approved by commissioners and must be submitted for a May deadline.
“We decided that we wanted to really move ahead with our drug enforcement enhancement programs,” Gallant said.
The sheriff said he would like to use grant money to put Cpl. Chancey Libby on drug enforcement work for six months. Libby, a full-time deputy and patrol corporal, has also worked for several years part time for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Gallant said he would also put some of the funds toward the county’s match for a state grant for up to eight new radar units. Drug abuse cases often start with motor vehicle violations, he explained.
Elsewhere in the county, the Rumford Police Department is eligible for up to $38,594 from the grant; the Norway Police Department is eligible for up to $20,643; and the Mexico Police Department is eligible for up to $13,463.
