SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) – Police are investigating the suspicious shooting death of a South Portland man who was found in the basement of his home.

South Portland police were sent to a Henry Street home around 8 p.m. Saturday after receiving information that a person had been injured there earlier in the day. When nobody answered the door, police entered the home and found 50-year-old Fred Wilson dead in the basement.

State police spokesman Steve McCausland said investigators believe Wilson was shot Saturday morning. Police have interviewed two of Wilson’s friends who were at the home at the time of the shooting.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy was planned. McCausland said police have recovered a firearm believed used in the shooting.
