Dear Sun Spots: Does anyone know when the annual Bates College end of the year rummage sale will be? – Linda, Auburn.

Answer: According to Julie Rosenbach, environmental coordinator for Bates College, Clean Sweep 2009 will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 20, in Underhill Arena.

Clean Sweep is in its eighth year, and each spring students donate somewhere in the ballpark of 5,000 unwanted items.

As students leave for the summer and faculty and staff do some spring cleaning, volunteers from local organizations collect items left behind in campus houses, dorms and off-campus apartments, and organize, clean and tag the items in preparation for the garage sale.

The sale typically raises from $12,000 to $17,000, all of which goes to the local nonprofit organizations whose volunteers worked to make it happen.

Dear Sun Spots: Poland Spring Preservation Society is hoping your readers will be able to assist us. Currently, we are working on a pictorial history of Poland Spring. We have many interesting pictures of the Poland Spring Complex from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. However, we are unable to locate any pictures of when the Job Corps was located at Poland Spring in the 1960s.

There were many residents of the Lewiston-Auburn area working at Poland Spring during that time; would any Sun Spots readers have any pictures they would loan to us? We would copy the pictures and immediately return them.

Additionally, we are always looking for new items to display at our museum in the Maine State Building, so if any readers have any Poland Spring related items they would like to donate or loan to us, we would be delighted to talk to them. Please call 998-4142 and leave a message. We thank you in advance. – David Andrews, treasurer, Poland Spring Preservation Society.
