PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Hundreds of U.S. Census Bureau employees are fanning across Maine with hand-held computers and GPS devices to verify addresses for next year’s census count.
The Census Bureau has hired about 600 workers to visit communities to verify the locations of housing units where the bureau next year will send questionnaires and enumerators for the 2010 census.
Retired Army Lt. Col. Patrick Burke is heading the state’s census operations.
He told Maine Public Broadcasting Network that more than 7,000 people applied for the 600 canvassing jobs. Canvassers will use hand-held computers and GPS devices — instead of paper maps — to locate and verify addresses.
Next year, the bureau will have over 2,000 employees in Maine working on the census.
