ACTON – Police on Saturday charged an Acton man with murder in the shooting death of his father outside their home on Hopper Road.

Ross Morrill, 22, was arrested by Maine State Police detectives who charged him with shooting Robert Morrill, 55, at about 3 p.m. Saturday, State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Robert Morrill died shortly after arrival at Goodall Hospital in Sanford.

The younger Morrill was taken to the State Police barracks in Alfred for questioning and was later charged with murder, McCausland said. Ross Morrill was taken to the York County Jail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday.

Police recovered a hunting rifle they believe was used in the shooting, McCausland said. An autopsy will take place Monday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

The shooting was reported by Vickie Morrill, the wife of the victim and the mother of the alleged shooter, police said.
