LEWISTON – Allister F. MacDormand, 74, of Gilead, died Friday, April 24, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, with his family by his side.

He was born in Bear River, Nova Scotia, on Nov. 11, 1934, the oldest of Kenneth (Jack) and Lillis Freeman MacDormand’s seven children.

After completing his education in Nova Scotia, he lived and worked in Alberta, Canada, for several years prior to moving to North Hampton, N.H., in 1958. In 1970, he became a U.S. citizen.

Al joined the U.S. Army in 1961, and served with the 1st Cavalry Division as an M.P., stationed along the DMZ in Korea. He later served with the 76th Division as a drill instructor and later as an instructor of military courses. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1993 with the rank of first sergeant after proudly serving his country for 32 years.

He was employed as an electronics technician with Dennison Manufacturing Co., in Framingham, Mass., for many years and later with Saxon Industries, also in Massachusetts.

In the late 1980s, he began a second career in sales, working for Hampton Motor Co., in Hampton, N.H.

On Aug. 24, 1974, he married the former Carolyn (Tammy) Chapman of Bethel and they made their home in North Hampton until they moved to Gilead in 1994. He then worked for several years as a salesman, and later driver, for Berlin City in Gorham, N.H.

Al was very active, had a keen sense of humor, a strong work ethic and was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed. He enjoyed antique cars, snowmobiling, camping and boating, as well as reading and working around his home.

In addition to his wife of 35 years; and his mother, of North Hampton, Mass.; he is survived by two sons, Randall and his wife, Mary Anne, of Buxton and Kevin and his girlfriend, Pauline Gravier, of Stoneham, Mass.; two grandsons, Brennan and Rory of Buxton; a sister, Maxine Smith and her husband, Lewis, of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; four brothers, Bruce and his wife, Linda, of North Hampton, N.H., Malcolm and his wife, Sherry, of New Durham, N.H., Royce and his wife, Carol, of Mims, Fla., and Eric of North Hampton; his mother-in-law, Rosalind Chapman of Bethel; a brother-in-law, Jack Chapman of Bethel; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father; a sister, Marjorie; and by his beloved German shepherd, Tasha.
