PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — A national group has listed a bridge connecting New Hampshire and Maine as one of the country’s most endangered historic places as supporters are planning a rally to save it.
The Memorial Bridge — the first major lift bridge in the eastern U.S. — connects Kittery, Maine, with Portsmouth.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation lists Memorial Bridge as one of the country’s most endangered historic places for 2009, threatened by possible state removal.
Representatives of the trust and other groups are holding a news conference and rally Tuesday to save the bridge. The news conference is at the Discover Portsmouth Center at 11:15 a.m.
About 100 people attended meetings in Maine and New Hampshire about the Memorial and Sarah Long bridges on Monday.
