SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) – Maine Corrections Commissioner Martin Magnusson says the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland has won the highest possible score in an accreditation review by an outside agency.
The American Correctional Association conducted a three-day reaccreditation of the facility, which can house 163 young offenders. The review looked at hundreds of safety, security, treatment and medical standards.
The Corrections Department said Wednesday that few juvenile facilities across the country achieve ACA accreditation. It says the auditors were complimentary of medical services, administration and comprehensive programming.
Long Creek is the third of six state corrections’ facilities that are undergoing reaccreditation.
