DIXFIELD – The Finance Committee recommended a 2009-10 municipal budget about $18,000 less than that of selectmen Tuesday night.

Town Manager Eugene Skibitsky said via e-mail on Wednesday that the committee recommended spending no money for social services. Selectmen recommend about $10,000, which is about half what was requested.

The committee also cut $5,000 from the public works account and $1,500 from regional expenses in the selectmen’s budget. That means the committee recommends spending no money for the River Valley Growth Council. Selectmen have recommended appropriating $1,000 for the organization.

However, the committee wants townspeople to provide Black Mountain of Maine with $1,000. Selectmen had recommended nothing.

If voters at town meeting May 28 agree to all Finance Committee recommendations, the total municipal budget would be $1,874,300, while the selectmen’s recommendation would be $1,892,351.

Residents may approve selectmen’s recommendations, Finance Committee recommendations, or some other figure for each of the municipal accounts.

Last year’s budget was $1,902,208, resulting in a tax rate of $16.25 per $1,000 of property value.

The annual town meeting begins at 6 p.m. in Dirigo Middle School.
