WILTON – Police Chief Dennis Brown said Tuesday a search is continuing for a man who assaulted a Wilton officer who was about to arrest him.
Stephen Demings, 21, of Wilton fled the police department early Monday afternoon as he was about to be arrested on a charge of supplying alcohol to underage persons, Brown said.
Demings assaulted Wilton officer Mark Przeslak and fled into a wooded area near the station shortly after 1 p.m., he said. The officer received minor injuries but was able to return to work, he said.
A Maine State Police dog was called to track Demings but was unsuccessful. Members of Jay Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and State Police assisted.
Two elementary schools, Academy Hill and Cushing, were advised to keep children off the playground while the search was conducted. Neither school was locked down, Brown said.
Demings is not armed and may still be in the Wilton area, Brown added. Officers are checking his previous residences and the homes of his friends.
Anyone with more information is asked to contact the department at 645-4222.
Demings is currently wanted on a probation hold and is a suspect in other criminal incidents in Wilton, Brown said.
