AUGUSTA (AP) – Fluctuating fuel prices have prompted enactment of a Maine law that allows schools to establish stabilization funds to help with winter fuel costs.

Supporters of the bill, which has been signed by Gov. John Baldacci, say it will provide schools with some budgetary relief while protecting taxpayers.

The sponsor, Democratic Sen. Justin Alfond of Portland, said prices for school bus fuel and heating fuel have been subject to wild market fluctuations, making it difficult for schools to budget for these costs.

Alfond said creating a fuel oil stabilization fund will provide a safety net, making it easier for schools to budget closer to their expected actual costs.
