BANGOR (AP) – Maine remains the nation’s whitest state with the oldest population.
The Bangor Daily News says updated census figures show that 95.3 percent of the state’s population is white, compared to the national figure of 66 percent. Figures also show the median age in Maine, already the oldest state, is growing. The number of Mainers who are 45 and older is increasing as the number of those under 18 declines.
Maine and Vermont have swapped the distinction of being America’s least-diverse state. The new figures show Maine to be one-tenth of a percent whiter than Vermont.
