ORONO (AP) – A team from Sumner Memorial High School has won a statewide competition to build an efficient wind turbine blade made from composite materials.

All told, 18 high schools from around Maine worked two months to research designs and produce wind blades for the competition.

Gov. John Baldacci has kicked off the competition Friday at the University of Maine, where the power output of each blade design was measured.

There are already two wind power projcts online in Maine producing more than 100 megawatts of electricity. Several more projects are on tap.
