Auburn – Mary Ida (Couture) DeAngelis, 88, died on Saturday, May 16, at the Androscoggin Hospice House.

The daughter of Eva and Paul Couture, Mary was born at home in Danville, on July 7, 1920. She was educated in New Hampshire and Lewiston schools. On Sept. 2, 1940, Mary began 53 years of marriage with Herman R. DeAngelis. They lived most of their adult lives at 368 College St. in Lewiston, where they raised their three children, Mary, Theresa and Charlie. While Herman served in the Navy during World War II, Mary worked at a shoe shop in Lewiston. After the birth of their first child, Mary worked from home for many years. In 1967, she joined the dorm staff at Bates College, making many new friends. She retired from Bates College after 17 years of employment.

Mary and Herman loved playing cards with friends and family members. The highlight of their lives was a trip to Italy with Uncle Jack and Cousin Charlie. They enjoyed meeting relatives who resided there and seeing where Herman’s father and other deceased relatives had lived. The stories the four of them came home with remain precious to this day. Herman, Uncle Jack and Cousin Charlie all died in 1994.

Mary remained at the College Street home until 2004, when she moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn. Mary renewed some old acquaintances and made many new friends while living at Schooner. She spent many hours volunteering through her knitting of hospice shawls. Mary will be remembered for many things including her great cooking of many favorites too numerous to list, the “shift” dresses she would sew for her daughters when they were away at college and the beautiful knitted afghans and warm winter socks many family members and friends still treasure.

Mary is survived by daughter, Mary Walker (of Kennebunk) and her family, Jennifer Walker, husband Adam Dubay, and their sons, Benjamin and Daniel (all of Kennebunkport), Garrett Walker and wife, Monica (of Barrington, N.H.), and Christopher Walker, wife Jennifer, and their daughter, Ashleigh (of Kennebunk); daughter Theresa Bourassa, husband John (of Glenburn), and their family of John’s daughters (and Theresa’s daughters of her heart, Lynne Bourassa of Bangor), Leslie, husband Jeff Nelson, and their children, Cooper and Avery Nelson (of Dover Foxcroft); son Charles DeAngelis, wife Jane, and their daughters, Elizabeth and Kathryn DeAngelis (of Lewiston). Mary is also survived by her remaining sister, Agnes Spaulding (of North Carolina); and numerous special cousins; nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, who died on March 24, 1994, Mary was predeceased by her parents; and sisters, Margaret Savage and Cecile Fortin.
