AUBURN – Mr. Claude C. Linnell Jr., 86, of Fryeburg, died on Wednesday, May 27, in Auburn, after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born in Colebrook, N.H. on Aug. 31, 1922, the son of Claude C. Linnell Sr. and Mildred (Storey) Linnell.

Along with his wife, Mary, he owned and operated his farm in Magalloway Plantation until it burned in 1951.

He worked in the woods and operated heavy machinery for many years and retired from the Maine Department of Transportation in 1981. He was known in this area as “The Grader Man.” He enjoyed hunting and fishing, time with his family and gardening until the end. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

Members of the family include his wife of 68 years, Mary (Ferren) Linnell of Fryeburg; two sons, Gary Linnell and his wife, Louise, of Fryeburg and Claude C. Linnell III and his wife, Brenda, of England; three daughters, Elizabeth Paquette and her husband, Norman, of Magalloway Plantation, Brenda L. Shields of Saco and Mildred Todd and her husband, Pablo, of Fryeburg; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
