CAMDEN (AP) – A Connecticut developer who ran into stiff opposition when he proposed opening a Dunkin’ Donuts in downtown Camden has decided to pull the plug on the project.
Michael Ouimet told the Bangor Daily News on Wednesday that the controversy and challenges he faced in the seaside tourist town have make it clear that there are easier places to do business.
Town officials had issued permits to allow the 20-seat coffee shop to open in what was a vacant storefront. Critics who complained that formula fast-food restaurants are at odds with the town’s character held a rally and petition drive to promote their stance.
The town is scheduled to vote June 23 on a proposal for a moratorium on formula businesses in the downtown area.
