LISBON – A referendum on the 2009-10 school budget will be held Tuesday, June 9.

Polls will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting in Ward 1 in Lisbon and Lisbon Center will take place at the Town Office conference room. Voting in Ward 2 in Lisbon Falls will take place at the MTM Community Center on School Street.

The registrar of voters will be available at the Town Office beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monday and at the polls Tuesday during balloting hours.

The budget of $14 million was presented by the School Committee and adopted by the Town Council. Of that mount, $5 million would be raised through local taxes.

Spending includes: regular instruction, $6 million; special education, $2 million; other instruction, $329,000; student and staff support, $1 million; system administration, $381,000; school administration, $783,000; transportation and buses, $641,000; facilities maintenance, $1.5 million; debt service and other commitments, $1.1 million; and all other expenditures, $306,000.

The referendum ballot will contain two articles but no figures will be listed. The first asks whether voters favor approving the school budget as adopted by the Town Council.

The second asks those who voted no on the budget why they opposed it: “too high” or “two low.”
