LIVERMORE FALLS – A man who told police he was trying to teach his dog to sit was charged with cruelty to animals, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Monday.

A witness reported to police that a man was beating a dog on Route 106 on June 2, Steward said. Police found the dog on the side of the road near Pike’s Corner Oasis store and its owner inside, Steward said.

Police officer Steve Wilkinson arrested Harry Robert Gardner, 25, of Livermore Falls, on warrants unrelated to the dog abuse, and issued him a summons on the animal cruelty charge, Steward said.

The animal control officer took the dog to a veterinarian in Farmington for treatment, he said. The town paid $59 for the medication, Steward said, and police will request the court to require Gardner to reimburse the town.

The dog is not in Gardner’s care, Steward said.
