LIVERMORE FALLS – A Jay man faces charges after witnesses said they saw him beating a woman Friday night and then threatening a person with a shotgun who went out to stop him, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Monday.

Officer Robert Samson arrested Andrew Deering, 22, on charges of domestic assault and terrorizing with a 12-gauge shotgun, Steward said.

The passer-by reported the incident was occurring in a driveway on Main Street about 8:30 p.m., he said. A caller also said there was a shotgun involved and was threatened with it, he said.

When the first officer arrived, the man had a long metal object in his hand, he said.

The officer called for backup and held the man at gunpoint until help arrived, Steward said.

Police found the object was a 24-inch pipe wrench, he said.

Before officers arrived on the scene, witnesses said the man put the shotgun inside, Steward said.

Deering was searched and shotgun shells were found in his pocket, Steward said.

Samson was assisted by fellow officer Steve Wilkinson and Jay police officer Richard Caton IV at the scene.
